Citrus County Introducing Pilot
Pet Patrol
Program to Recycle Concrete
Citrus County Solid Waste Management will soon implement a concrete recycling
program at the Citrus County Landfill. This new program was discussed at Tuesday s regu-
lar board meeting of the Board of Citrus County Commissioners while conducting a public
hearing to adopt fees, assessment rates and an emergency fee schedule for Solid Waste FY
2012-13.
The pilot program would work by accepting clean concrete from local contractors
and builders with a $0.00 tipping fee for clean material. A $90.00 relocation fee will apply
should there be any waste in the load other than concrete. The concrete would be stockpiled
until a sufficient amount of concrete was accumulated. That concrete would then be crushed
into aggregate which will be used at the landfill or by other County Divisions for upcoming
projects.
Director of Solid Waste Management, Casey Stephens says this program would
help not only residents, but save the County money as well. “We are trying to offer another
service to customers of the landfill and at the same time produce a product we can use inter-
nally at the landfill.” Stephens says they will contract with a company to bring a concrete
crusher into the landfill and crush the concrete down to aggregate once or twice a year. The
concrete recycling program will begin October 1, 2012.
