Spare The Rod?
With Doug Johnston
Most
European
countries have banned the
use of corporal punishment
in their schools. The U. S.
Supreme Court ruled in
1977, (Ingram vs. Wright)
that paddling in schools did
not violate the “Cruel and Unusual Pun-
ishment” clause of the constitution. Case
closed? Not hardly. The discretion of cor-
poral punishment in schools is left to each
state.
In the United States, Florida
is among 22 states that still allow the
paddle in public schools, but it is an is-
sue that is decided by respective county
school boards. Levy County, according to
the Levy County Disciplinary Response
Code, still allows paddling as long as it
is not in conflict with county disciplinary
policy and complies with Florida statutes.
