hunt club in Levy County.
John C. Champion, 21 was hunting from his Polaris Ranger in the Fiber Factory Hunt
Club, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investiga-
tors.
Champion, who is a paraplegic, was hunting alone around 6 p.m. and was attempt-
ing to cock his crossbow. He accidently fired the bolt through his left foot, pinning his foot
to the floor of the Ranger, investigators said.
He attempted to free his foot, but was unsuccessful. He then tried to drive out, but became
stuck on some brush.
Other hunters and family members arrived a short time later and took Champion to
Levy County paramedics.
Champion was transported the Seven Rivers Hospital in Crystal River for treat-
ment. He suffered a puncture wound and several broken bones in his left foot, said FWC
investigators. FWC officials are investigating the incident.

dence.”
Medical records of the child, collected by the CPI Unit from Shand’s Hospital,
showed that the child had suffered multiple bleeds in the child’s brain, in-
dicating that more than one incident had occurred, according to the report,
and “the victim could not have sustained the injuries from a two foot fall
onto a soft surface.”
A CPU investigator spoke with Shettleroe in Crystal River on
Sept. 14. She denied shaking the child and said she’s the sole caretaker of
the child, that there was only one occasion when someone from outside of
the residence had watched the victim. She said she’d left the child unat-
tended on the bed (Sept. 11). Text records indicated that Shettleroe began
texting on 12:49 p.m., and stopped around 2:16 p.m. By 2:50 p.m., a family  Shettleroe
member used Shettleroe’s phone to alert another person that the child was
going to the hospital. The report stated that family members had to tell Shettleroe to take the
child to the hospital. Around 4:00 p.m., the report said, Shettleroe took the victim to a local
store to cash a check and buy cigarettes prior to going to the hospital. She returned to the
residence at 4:25 p.m., delaying his medical treatment, the report stated.
According to interviews, as per the investigator, the boy was born about four weeks
prematurely, and cried constantly, into the night. He had to be given medication for gas.
