Pedestrian Struck & Killed On U.S.19
An unidentified pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Homosassa early Monday
morning, 12:29 a.m., Sept. 13, at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 19 and Grover Cleveland
Blvd. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, it was believed at the time of the Media Re-
lease that the pedestrian came from the Bella Oasis Hotel parking lot, chasing after a black
dog.
The vehicle that struck the pedestrian was a 2010 4-door Ford Citrus County
Sheriff’s Office marked patrol unit driven by 41 year-old Citrus County Sheriff’s Office
Patrol Sgt. Richard “Ricky” Grant, who was traveling north in the left lane of U.S. Hwy.
19. The report stated that Sgt. Grant slowed for the dog, but did not see the pedestrian, who
ran into the vehicle’s path and was struck. The pedestrian went onto the hood, struck the
windshield, then went onto the roof, and off the right side of the vehicle, falling onto the
roadway, against the curb. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at 7:16 a.m. by Emer-
gency Room staff members at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
The name of the victim had not yet been released at the time of the Media Release
due to notification of next of kin. The crash remains under investigation, and charges are
pending, but the release did not give any additional information. According to CCSO Public
Informtion Officer Gail Tierney, it is customary in officer-related crashes to turn the inves-
tigation over to the Florida Highway Patrol.
