Remembering 9/11 With Dedication
Pet Patrol
of Memorial at Little Springs Park
A serious crowd gathered Saturday in Little Springs Park, Crystal River for the
unveiling of a Memorial to those who either lost their lives or were effected because of the
attacks 9-11. Renee McPheeters of Crystal River led the 9-11 Never Forget Homecoming
Rally which was one of patriotism and people joining together to remember the events that
changed this great Nation of ours. Also in remembrance were our military serving now.
“Stay aware, Stay alert, Your civil liberties will always be under attack” and “The Price of
Freedom is Sacrifice and Service” were some of the words used to keep us on guard.
Speakers who observed the attack as well as ones who had friends lose their lives
gave their account of the tragedy. An emotional speech was given by Mike Shier who was
on the 68th floor in the tower when the attack occured. Mike said those in his office took the
elevator to the 43rd floor and had to go down steps the other 42 floors. His emotions were
apparent again after 8 months therapy when he returned home to a letter arriving with con-
dolences for the Shier family on his loss. His salary went from a 6 figure job to 2 minimum
wage jobs.
Praise, prayer and witnessing the effects of 9-11 kept the emotions high as red,
white and blue flags waved scattered among the crowd. The piece of steel in the case with
a laser etched background by Kathy and Glenn Palhof of Kustom Glass will be placed on
display in the Crystal River City Hall. Speaker Suzan Franks placed white roses at the base
of the 9-11 Memorial during the ceremony as a request by her son who was a member of the
