Growing Up
Healthy
With Doug Johnston
Research over the past few decades
has made for healthier lives
for most Americans. The
United States Department
of Agriculture has told us
the evils of over-indulging
in coffee, sugar, fried foods,
caffeine, vegetable oil, salt,
red meat, whole milk, egg
yolks, potatoes, and sunlight among other
things. As Americans we are super health
conscious. McDonalds has bought into the
hype. They announced last week that they
are reducing the size of their French fried
potato servings in Happy Meals. Shucks,
the French fries are the only food I like
from McDonalds.
What really strikes me is that I re-
member a time when families ate fried
food two or three times a day. We had
fried chicken every Sunday, fried fish,
fried pork chops, fried hamburgers, fried
okra, fried tomatoes and oh yes, fried po-
tatoes. All of these fried foods should have
killed us, but all but one of my graduating
class is still alive and on the downhill side
of sixty six.
