The family of 21-month-old Cayla Barnes had traveled from their home in Citrus
Springs to 5752 S. Beaver Point for a day of boating with the child’s grandmother. As they
were stocking the pontoon boat and preparing to launch, family members momentarily lost
track of Cayla, then spotted her in the water.
Her father and a neighbor recovered the youngster from the canal and performed
CPR until EMS arrived on scene. The toddler was transported to Seven Rivers Regional
Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m.
Cayla’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Leesburg for autopsy
to determine the actual cause and manner of death.
