The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will participate in

"Operation Dry Water," a national effort against boating under the influence (BUI), which

runs June 30 through July 2, and will be extended in Florida through July 4. During this

time, boaters can expect to see more officers on the water, identifying people who operate

boats and watercrafts under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with the goal of reducing the

number of accidents and deaths due to impaired boating.

In Florida, it is illegal to operate a vessel with a blood alcohol content level of

0.08% or higher. Alcohol use is a leading contributor to recreational boating deaths. During

July 2016, there were more reportable accidents (96) and more fatal accidents (8) than dur-

ing any other month that year. During 2016, 24% of the victims of 16 fatal boating accidents

were related to alcohol or drug use.
