Beware - scam artists abound during the summer
Ants and mosquitoes aren't the only pests that are prevalent in the summer. As
the mercury rises, the number of fraud cases and scams against the elderly also climbs. The
Citrus County Sheriff s Office cautions citizens to be aware of summer scams - from lawn
care services to air conditioning units or home repairs.
During the summer months, repair men perform such home improvement work
as roofing, plumbing, electrical wiring, window replacement and rodent removal. There
is a trend of citizens being charged more for summer work, than at other times, for home
services, especially the elderly population. This is a common scam because many elderly
victims give their credit card or debit card numbers freely to these workers, and by the time
the victim realizes they ve been overcharged it s too late.
Elderly victims might be intimidated, frightened or embarrassed. Perhaps their
hearing isn't what it used to be, and the scammer insists the deal was made for "$6,700,"
rather than the "$600 to $700" promised. Vulnerability is just what scammers are counting
on.
