deer crossed his path on U.S. Hwy. 19. The crash took place at 5:50 a.m., 0.1 mile south
of King Rd. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Martin was driving a 2001 Dodge
Dakota, traveling south in the outside lane, when the deer crossed his path and was struck
by the front of Martin’s vehicle. Martin, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured in the
crash.

This building, was built across from the Izaak Walton Lodge and next to Florida Coastal Re-
alty in Yankeetown. Back then Knotts and Lynch Realty served as the Yankeetown Post Of-
fice from 1926 until 1965. (It was relocated to Harmony Lane) The mail was brought over to
Yankeetown from Dunnellon by mailman Hugh Coleman who probably gave the town it’s name
bringing the “Yankees” their mail when founder A F Knotts had planned to call it Knotts. A
usual morning would find everyone lined up sitting on the edge of the porch waiting on news
from anywhere while Postmaster Norma Knotts sorted the mail and placed it in the combina-
tion boxes. Norma was married to Gene Knotts, long time mayor of Yankeetown and nephew
of A F Knotts. Clarence E McTaggert is heading home with his mail. Clarence and wife Gladys
were very active in community service and Gladys was a real “crafty” lady. Women gathered
regularly to make pine straw baskets and all kinds of beaded jewelry and needle craft. The
way to end most days was to drive to the end of Hwy 40 and sit at the two long gone concrete
picnic tables and watch the sun go down.
