Reckless Driver  - Continued from page 1
Remembering the Past
identified as 43 year-old Shane Steven Sparks, accelerated to speeds in excess
of 100 mph - into oncoming traffic.
In spite of Dep. Sullivan s attempts to stop Sparks, Sparks continued
to flee, and when he approached Dep. Mashburn s roadblock, he intentionally
swerved to strike Deputy Mashburn s patrol vehicle.
Sparks
Dep. Sullivan was given authorization to utilize the PIT maneuver
and was able to successfully stop Sparks before he caused injury to other mo-
torists. In the PIT maneuver (precision immobilization technique), the deputy hits the flee-
ing car in manner designed to make the driver lose control of the vehicle and stop, and is
considered a safer solution to stopping a fleeing vehicle.
When deputies took Sparks into custody, deputies suspected that he was under the
influence of unknown substances. He was transported to Seven Rivers Regional Medical
Center in Crystal River where he was medically cleared before being transported to the Levy
County Detention Facility for booking.
Sparks was charged with fleeing and attempt to elude law enforcement, reckless
driving, assault on a law enforcement officer, and possession of (unspecified) narcotics. He
is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
This investigation is ongoing, and additional charges could be filed, according to
the sheriff s office.
