Sheriff Dept. with bomb threat device Final Civil War In Florida Talk March 18th
When John Milton took the oath of office to become Florida s
fifth governor on October 7, 1861, he took the reins of a state deep en-
tangled within a Civil war. The Federal blockade of Florida s coast-
line was making it difficult to bring in the supplies necessary to aid
the Southern troops fighting to the north and to feed the women and
children waiting for them at home. Milton worked hard to establish
Florida as a large provider of food and salt for the Confederate Army.
Milton was a strong advocate of Florida s secession from the
Union on January 10, 1861, and throughout the war he pressed the
Confederate government to maintain enough troops for an adequate
defense of the state, even though the Confederacy largely ignored his
pleas. However, throughout the war Milton maintained absolute loyalty to the Confederate
cause to the end.
The Levy County Historical Society is pleased to welcome R. Boyd Murphree,
former assistant editor with the Papers of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois and a for-
mer archivist with the Florida State Archives in Tallahassee to give visitors a view of John
Milton and the times. Boyd currently is the Project Manager for the UF Smathers Libraries
Florida Family and Community History digital project.
