Couple Celebrates 70 Years Together
Low-Cost Path to End Animal
Homelessness in Citrus
Special to The Newscaster by Mary Perry
Have you ever ventured out for a solitary walk, felt the refreshing burst of energy
that arises almost instantly while basking in the radiance of the sun, or enjoying the cool-
ing effect of a gentle breeze, and slowly find yourself becoming aware that you are not on
a solitary journey after all. There is movement at your feet, you look down and discover
that you now have a companion. Your happy mood has just been enhanced, so you smile
and bend down to stroke the neck of an adorable little kitty who is eagerly looking up at
you, relishing your attention, or gently rub the soft fur of a dog who somehow seems to
be beseeching you. Either way, after a brief visit with the gentle stranger you resume your
walk and return to your own thoughts. Your hopeful short-term companion has already
trailed behind, sadly aware that, once again, he has not forged the friendship that might last
forever.
If you did give your visitor a second thought, it was probably that he was a friend-
ly guy enjoying the out-of-doors just as you were, and that he would soon return home.
Sometimes, that is true. But often, it isn't. He could very easily be one of a large number of
dogs or cats that lives in Citrus County, but has no place to call home. These animals must
learn at a very early stage of life how to adapt to a world that offers no sustenance once they

unwanted animals who are equally engaged in a desperate struggle to survive. There is no
comfort at the end of the day for these hapless animals. There is no shelter from the cold,
the heat, the rain, or from the bites and stings from other species of animals that are noctur-
nal in nature and prowl throughout the night.
The misery of our homeless dog and cat population is compounded by the fact that
they breed whenever nature makes it possible for them to reproduce. Cats can become preg-
nant as early as four months of age. This serious problem perpetuates itself unless there is
human intervention.
Citrus County is blessed with an organization whose stated purpose is to eliminate
homelessness among the countless dogs and cats in Citrus County who are on their own.
The name of this wonderful organization is "Snippet Citrus." Their mission is to "end pet
homelessness in Citrus County through providing high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter ser-
vices," and to "educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering all pets.
In addition to preventing thousands of litters of unwanted kittens and puppies from leading
miserable lives, sterilizing pets helps prevent certain cancers, reduces roaming, fighting and
aggression.
"Snippet Citrus" provides their spay/neuter services to all Citrus County citizens
who are in need of financial assistance. They wish to stop homelessness before it starts,
thereby reducing intake of cats and dogs into the animal shelter. Overcrowded conditions
lead to euthanizing over 1,000 innocent animals each year, in spite of the fact that local
