grasses alone have more than 5,000 different
forms. Even within a given species, the variety
is never ending; there are over a million different
varieties of corn or grapes.
When God spoke plants into existence on
Day 3 of creation week, there was a cacophony of
variety created grasses, herbs, and fruit immediately covered the Earth (1:11-13). The
first plant mentioned (grass) has a seed that is not particularly obvious to the eye until
maturity. The second plant mentioned (the herb) has seeds apparent as a visible feature.
The third plant has the seed in the fruit. Thus the writer cataloged the plants by a simple,
natural division- using the structure of the seed/plant as the guide. The Bible provides
the first broad classification of plant groupings.
God also made sure that we understand that organisms reproduce "after its
kind". The expression "after its kind" occurs ten times in the first chapter of Gen-
esis. God decreed a boundary between very different kinds of creatures. There can be
change within a kind, but to change one type of plant or animal into a completely dif-
ferent kind is simply impossible. The study of genetics has shown this to be absolutely
true.

numbers of ways and produces a great number of different harmonies. But the musician
