Mary Bergdoll, Yankeetown School ESP Of The Year
Mary Bergdoll, confidential secretary at Yankeetown School, joined
the school staff four and a half years ago.
"I love my job!" Mary says. "I work with the best group of people
anywhere! I enjoy helping people but I especially enjoy the kids. Even taking
the smallest part in molding a child's future has many rewards." Mary adds
that the biggest challenge in her job is trying to find enough time to help
everyone!
When she looks at the educational system, Mary notes that many
teachers don't have enough money to spend on classroom supplies and projects. She also
thinks the testing system could be improved.
"Speaking as a parent and an employee of a school, I feel as though our students go
through an extraordinary amount of testing. I do realize that testing is necessary to determine
how well a child is learning (ie. classroom testing). However, our students are placed under a
lot of undue stress to perform. These two issues go hand in hand. If we want our teachers to
be held accountable for our children's scores, we need to give them all of the tools necessary
to do that job."
Her advice to students is, "Take responsibility for yourself and everything you do."
Among Mary's favorite leisure activities are doing Sudoku puzzles, scrapbooking, reading,
and shopping. She and her husband Ken have four children, Rebecca, 22, Rachael, 14, Chyenne,
11, and Devin, 10. Mary is originally from New York.
