straw and glossy paper. If you have the room, tree trimmers will usually be happy to give
you a load of wood chips.  Good nitrogen sources are uncooked fruit (vegetable peels),
eggshells, coffee grounds and grass clippings. I keep my kitchen scraps in an old cat food
bag in the freezer and when it is full I dump the scraps in a three sided bin. I then cover the
frozen scraps with leaves (from the bags my neighbors provided), and a pitchfork of wood
chips (from the tree trimmers). I turn the pile occasionally and now in this dry weather
I have to moisten it from time to time. It takes time for it to break down but the result is
beautiful, rich soil. The earth worms just appeared and they too contribute to the process by
keeping the pile aerated and their “castings” provide further nutrition. I truly resent paying
$3.00 for a couple of quarts of potting soil that usually has sand in it when it is right here
“for the making.”
