ney refused to stop and continued traveling east on State Rd. 44, then turned right onto State
Rd. 490 (Homosassa Trail). Numerous patrol with activated lights and sirens followed Whit-
ney’s vehicle, headed west on Homosassa Trail, reaching speeds of approximately 70 mph,
running stop signs and stop lights and passing vehicles on yellow lines. When he reached
the firehouse on Homosassa Trail, Whitney made a u-turn to travel east on Homosassa Trail.
During the pursuit, Whitney’s vehicle ran vehicles off the roadway. Stop sticks were used
and punctured Whitney’s tires, but he refused to pull over for deputies. He continued east
on State Rd. 44 and turned south onto S. Lecanto Hwy. (County Rd. 491), swerving widely
from left to right, attempting to strike several patrol vehicles. He eventually struck a patrol
vehicle which caused Whitney to lose control of the truck and leave the roadway. At this
point, several patrol officers were able to apprehend Whitney at County Rd. 491 and Saun-
ders Way in Lecanto and take him into custody.
The two television sets stolen from Sears were still inside the vehicle when Whit-
ney was placed under arrest. He refused to make a statement at the Citrus County Detention
Facility. The Career Criminal Unit advised that Whitney qualifies as a habitual felony offen-
deras he was charged with other felony offensers in Citrus County and numerous offenses in
Hernando County. The arrest report stated that Whitney’s bond was set at none because it is
believed that he would be a flight risk and a risk to members of the community.
When Whitney was apprehended, a deputy recognized him as the person captured
on video on Feb. 16, stealing a generator from Honda of Crystal River. He was additionally
charged with grand theft ($300 or mmore); his bond was set at $2,000 on the added charge.
According to Gail Tierney, Public Information Officer with the CCSO, other charg-
