Yankeetown Mayor's Report
A Guest Commentary by Yankeetown Mayor Dawn Clary
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - This will be my last article as Mayor. For
the time being I will keep writing a weekly column about town affairs as a council person
to keep people somewhat informed on town stuff, but this will be the last words as mayor,
almost literally as the day this issue comes out, the new Yankeetown Mayor and Council
will be sworn in at high noon on the town hall steps. I’ve been the mayor for approximately
6 years now, through some of Yankeetown’s more challenging times.
It has been a very interesting and for the most part, rewarding experience. I feel
like I’ve gotten a law degree with all the lawsuits filed against the town. I, like most people,
had little experience with the courts, but I soon learned it ain’t like Perry Mason. While the
courts seemed slow, horribly expensive, and too easily misused, my faith has been restored
a bit in that they do seem to eventually come to some kind of just decision and they are ba-
sically pretty smart. I also feel like I got a degree in psychology. I have learned a lot about
my fellow human beings, some good, some bad. I have met some of the worst people I have
ever met in my life, but also have met some of the best and most wonderful people I have
ever met in my life.
I am most proud of our accomplishment of building our new water plant. But I am
also proud of the little things that we did such as our aggressive program to get a lot of our
critical isolation valves up to snuff. Something no one would notice except when they were
out of water to repair the valve, but even within the last month we had a water line break
where previously many people would have been on boil water notice, now it is relatively
few. I am proud that we were able to keep the town afloat despite having no experience and
suffering through on the job training.
I would like to thank all the people who have supported me and have put up with
me. I especially would like to thank all the volunteers. I wish the new Mayor the best of luck
and hope Yankeetown has a bright and happy future. Good Night and Good Luck
