Child Abuse
Remembering the Past
- Continued from page 1
They were informed that the child was suffering from chronic hypothermia, which was
indicated by her low body temperature and the thermal injuries on her body attributed to on-
going exposure to low temperatures. The child’s legs cannot be straightened from a curled,
fetal position, due to being contracted for extended periods of time in an attempt to conserve
body heat. The muscle and tendon damage to the legs is so severe that the legs could not be
straightened , even when the victim was sedated. The child is severely malnourished and
suffering from re-feeding syndrome, which occurs when a victim has been starved for long
periods of time and the body reacts negatively when re-introduced to food. An MRI showed
that the victim has suffered atrophy of the brain tissue and had approximately Ω to 3/4 inch
of blood on the surface of her brain which is consistent with abusive head trauma and com-
monly seen in “shaken baby” cases.
Skinner had previously told investigators that she is the sole caregiver and cus-
todial parent of the infant and that no one else has had custody of the child. On Feb. 14,
detectives went to Skinner’s residence, and she told them that her attorney had instructed her
not to speak with law enforcement. She was placed under arrest and held without bond at
the Citrus County Detention Facility on three counts of child neglect without causing great
bodily harm, 2 counts of child neglect causing great bodily harm, 2 counts of aggravated
child abuse causing great bodily harm and 1 count of aggravated abuse, torture, punishment
or caging of a child.
