Remembering the Past
Erik Bendl, 50, from Louisville Kentucky, is a man with a mission. With a giant inflatable game
ball painted like the world, Erik’s latest mission is to walk rolling the ball from Pensacola to
Tampa. This is his ninth walk consisting of one to five months in length in 39 states and over
6000 miles. The walks are to bring awareness to diabetes which took his mother Gerta Bendl’s
life at age 54 who was a State Representative in Louisville. When passing through Inglis, Hickory
Island Lodge was gracious enough to comp him a room for the night to repair his ball, spend the
night and get cleaned up, a nice change from sleeping in a tent./Sally Price
