Man on Bicycle Dies from Injuries
Remembering the past
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s office has notified CCSO that Ken-
neth Smith, 57, of Inverness died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa on Monday, Nov. 29, at
3:32 p.m. He was the critically injured bicyclist in the Nov. 27th crash in Inverness.
Out-of-state family members were ultimately located, and have been notified of
Smith’s death.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office will be completing its crash investigation and
turning it over to the State Attorney’s office for review. Shari Wayne, 40, of Citrus Springs
was driving a white 2010 Toyota pickup northbound on 41. She stopped for the light at the
intersection. When it turned green, she proceeded, striking a 57-year-old Inverness man
who was crossing 41 (heading towards Old Floral City Road) on his bicycle. No citations
have been issued at this time; however, the investigation is continuing.
The Crossroads Bar was located on the SW corner of Hwy 19 and Highway 40 W
where the present day Kangaroo Station is located. It was the local watering hole for “spir-
its” and had a reputation around the Tri-county area. Many marriages were lost over visits
to this local legend and a few lives also were given up by some that frequented the bar. It
was called Benner’s Cabins, Restaurant, Bar in the early 50’s. But has always carried the
name of Crossroads Bar according to old timers. Winnie Benner was the owner and in 1955
it was sold to Beulah (Boots) and Amos Buck. I can still hear Boots singing her favorite
song “Lookin Out My Backdoor”. The cabins were deleted and the bar flourished during the
50’s and 60’s with the construction of the Florida Power (Progress Energy) plants and the
Cross State Barge Canal. Owners after Boots were Murray, Means and Michalski. The bar
was eventually taken down along with Dick Ives Texaco next door to make room for growth
coming to the area. From Sally Price Archives
