Surveying the Way - If you have seen a survey crew in recent weeks moving from the Gulf
through Yankeetown you may wonder "what's next". According to Department of Environ-
mental Protection (DEP) crew chief Mike Mercuri, tide gauge stations measuring the highs
and lows of tides and water levels are being placed from south Florida through Apalachicola
for monitoring purposes. Survey crews are working up and down the west coast of Florida
gathering elevations to work into the system records. The gauges are placed mainly at boat
ramps. Scientific measurements will be recorded every 10 minutes. Past historical data has
been recovered and verified and this new system will add more information to that recorded
history. Mercuri said they are not sure yet just where the gauge will be placed in the Yankee-
town area but past data and accurate future data is the reason for the mission. Pictured doing
the surveying in front of Izaak Walton Lodge this past week are Mike Mercuri, DEP crew chief,
Dustin Bell, Jeff Stephens and Tom Bennett. Photo & Story by Sally Price
