Chassahowitzka residents
from the federal government that will significantly buy down their recent sewer assess-
ments.
The county received a $1.15 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) that will be put toward buying down property owners’ assessments to hook
up to the new county sewer system in the community. County Commission staffers had been
vying for the grant for more than two years and were elated to finally get the grant money
in hand.
Public Works Director Glenn McCracken said there was other good news, too.
Now that all the elements of the project have been closed out, the county has realized about
$400,000 in savings on the total project, and that will also go to reducing the assessments.
That means something around $2,586 will come off each sewer assessment and
lien, and, given what residents have paid already, it would reduce a homeowner’s assess-
ment who had financed to a balance of approximately $308, McCracken said. Those who
paid up front are expected to get a check back for the reduction.
