between citizens, first responders and a woman whose life they saved on Oct. 29, when she
collapsed from cardiac arrest inside Joyce s Courtside Pub in Inverness.
Mike Hall, Executive Director of Nature Coast EMS, said that saving lives takes
a entire community. "Bystanders can start giving care before we even know about it," said
Hall, "while someone calls 911." The current format being used in CPR (cardiopulmonary
resuscitation), he said, is a "hands only" technique - hard, fast chest compressions that any-
one can do.
Several people were recognized as "Heart Savers" by Nature Coast EMS for com-
ing to the aid of Diana Martin, who had stopped breathing. Michael Joyce, of Joyce s Court-
side Pub, was first on scene. While Joyce worked to save Martin, bystanders went next door
to Nicole s House of Cakes to summon help from Nicole House and Nicholas Lembo, who
immediately came over to assist Joyce. Next on scene were first responders Deputy Chris
