IPDInglis Police Department held the “Click Our Kids” Child Safety Seat pro-
gives away a dozen car seats
Remembering the past
The
gram at the Inglis Community Center on Monday afternoon, December 6, where approxi-
mately 12 car seats were distributed to Inglis residents who had registered for the program.
K-9 Officer Brian Hilberer and Patrol Officer Maria Brown handed out the car
seats, answered questions from concerned parents/guardians, and instructed them on how to
properly install the car seats.
Ofc. Hilberer said that the “Click Our Kids” program was more successful than
he expected. He raised $1,200 in donations by Inglis residents, citizens and police depart-
ment employees, which allowed him to purchase 24 car seats for Inglis residents and their
children. Ofc. Hilberer stated that he developed the program with one goal in mind, to keep
the children of Inglis safe; “If just one of the car seats that was donated saves a child’s life,
then the program was a total success.”
If you need information about child safety seats or Florida laws concerning their
use, or are in need of a car seat for your child, please contact the Inglis Police Department
at (352) 447-0303, as the Inglis Police Department will hold a second day to give out the
remainder of the car seats for residents who were unable to attend the Dec. 6 program. If
you are an Inglis resident and would like to request a car seat, you can register for the next
event at the Inglis Police Department. The date of the second event will be announced later.
The Hodges family home on 2nd St in Cedar Key is an exact duplicate of the Capt Inglis “Bun-
galow” built on Port Inglis Island in the early 1890’s at the rise of the phosphate boom. W R
Hodges fell in love with “The Bungalow” and had carpenters visit Port Inglis Island and du-
plicate the home for him in 1910 overlooking the harbor in Cedar Key where he raised family
highly active in state and county politics. The only change due to necessity was the kitchen cut
from the “dog trot” and moved next door and a modern kitchen added.
Port Inglis Island
(Chambers Island) with approximately 34 structures at the mouth of the Withlacoochee River
(south side) in 1902 was the world’s largest shipping port of phosphate built on and around
one of the largest indian middens of an era being the most important industrial area of the
indians. On the south island bordering the barge canal but facing the Gulf was a business/
residence of Captain John Livingston Inglis called “The Bungalow”. It consisted of 5 main
rooms with the finest of detail and furnishings of man who loved the better things in life
and also entertaining his friends. WW1 killed shipping to Europe shutting down the port. The
island over the years changed ownership and suffered storm damage as well as vandalism.
Many fishermen used the vacant home as a refuge. Eventually it burned. This copy of “The
Bungalow” in Cedar Key is the only true picture of the home of Capt Inglis that graced this
sacred area overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. From Sally Price archives.
