Remembering the past
About 7 miles north of Inglis go east on SE 147 Pl to find the sacred resting place
of approximately 460 known graves and 60 not marked, known or readable. Lenny Dutkie-
wicz has mapped out the burials, identified 46 veterans and several Confederate soldiers that
the Inglis VFW Post 8698 places flags on the graves on Memorial Day.
Cedars of Lebanon Cemetery is all that remains of the old town of Lebanon, found-
ed by Christopher Columbus (CC) Gaines. Gaines had come to Florida from his SC birth-
place in 1860 at age 14. Gaines, nicknamed Lum, at age 16, served in the 3rd Seminole
Indian War, Florida State Militia from 1862 to 1863. At age 18 he served in the Confederate
Infantry 9th Regiment Div. from 1864 to the end of the war. At one point he fought at Ft
Clinch in the vicinity of present day Hudson Street in Inglis. After the war ended Gaines
worked at Cedar Mill Point Sawmill on Chamber s Island at the mouth of the Withlacooch-
ee River rafting logs and saving his money.
On Dec 29, 1870 he married his wife, Frances Barco and brought her to Levy
County, establishing a farming community named Lebanon in an area across the road from
present day Robinson Ranch just south of King Road. Here they raised their 12 children,
one adopted child and 2 orphans. From the mid 80 s until about 1930 Lebanon was a busy
place with stores, school, church, post office and about 50 families.
Gaines started the cemetery named for the stand of cedar trees and from the Cedars
of Lebanon from the Bible. He built a church and preached (not ordained), did funerals,
