All Manatee Sanctuaries in place
early in Kings Bay
As a result of the last cold front, many manatees have returned to the Kings Bay
springs (Crystal River) early this year. The number of visitors and boating traffic in Kings
Bay has also significantly increased over this past week, with most recreational activities
taking place at the critical spring sites where manatees rest during the winter months.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has placed all seven of the manatee
sanctuaries, two days before the official manatee sanctuary season begins. The decision
was possible because of the authority under the Kings Bay Federal Manatee Refuge to cre-
ate and enforce temporary no-entry areas before the official start of the manatee sanctuary
season (Nov. 15). The last manatee count last Wednesday showed 213 manatees in Kings
Bay with most concentrations found at the King Spring and Magnolia Springs (Gator Hole)
sanctuaries.
As it gets warmer, most of the local manatees leave the springs and will likely be
found feeding around Kings Bay, which increases the chances of conflicts with boat traffic
in the Bay. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is urging boat operators in Kings Bay to oper-
ate with extra care as manatees are starting to spread throughout Kings Bay between the
cold and warm intervals.
The 4th Annual Rubber Duck Race sponsored by the Friends of the Withlacoochee Gulf Pre-
serve, Yankeetown took place Sunday at noon on the Withlacoochee River. Over 470 rubber
ducks took to the water for a chance to make their sponsor a winner. Three hundred and
fifty ducks had previous years experience. The additional one hundred and twenty got their
chance to get their feet wet for the first time due to the generous support of the community.
The Friends wish to thank all who participated in making this a successful fund raiser for the
