Port Citrus,
Due Diligence Needed
By Thomas Griffin
The Citrus BOCC has taken a
big step in the initial funding for the Port
Authority of Citrus County. The ocean
freight industry has viewed this location as
having good potential for a strategic gate-
way for various trade commodities. But a
strong feasibility study on cargo potential
needs to focus on three areas.
The first priority would be bulk
barge load connections to well established
services that run in the Inter Coastal Wa-
terway (ICW) from Apalachicola to Mex-
ico and north-south waterways like the
Mississippi River. Strategic alliances with
companies like Parker Towing Company,
Tuscaloosa AL and Louisiana Carriers LC,
Cut Off, LA would be key. But ultimately
discussions with sellers and buyers of the
commodities would be necessary. For ex-
ample, Closet Maid Corporation, Ocala
FL buys steel coil from steel producers in
Texas and moves to Florida in volume by
truck. Scrap Metal moves in barge loads
from Tampa, FL to steel mills in Alabama
and Louisiana. These would be potential
