Re: Community Center
Levy County Board of County Commissioners
Is it possible that the Inglis Area Community Center has been "born again"?
Ten years ago, I was quite excited about the construction of the new Community
District 5
Center in Inglis. At that time, I personally, along with two former town commissioners and
a few other dedicated citizens, spent much time and did much work toward the establish-
ment of the goals, plans, and policies and procedures for the efficient beginning and con-
“…..government of the people, by the people, for the people…..”
tinuation of developing and managing activities in this new Community Center that would
be of benefit to all age and interest groups.
However, time after time our plans ran into so many snags that finally we just had
to give up hope that rewarding and entertaining activities would ever be available in our
town and so close to home. It was a bitter disappointment to many back then, and what a
shame that the building has since been referred to as the "white elephant" just sitting there
eating up money from the Town's budget!
But hope has returned! Two weeks ago on a Thursday night I participated in a class
at the Community Center along with at least a dozen others. For some time Drinda Merritt,
a local resident and former Inglis Commissioner, has been offering to donate her time to
teach a class in quilting, and finally, with the encouragement and assistance of Betty Berger,
Commissioner Goode, Valarie Davenport and others, the arrangements were made and the
class began. Already it shows great promise of being a welcome learning and social expe-
rience.
Further, there is more to come. A number of additional classes and activities have
been announced for the near future. Valarie and her committee have been very active in
working through the red tape involved with researching and developing activities that will
help to bring our community back to life by offering a gathering place for those with inter-
ests and abilities just waiting to be fulfilled.
I am very appreciative of Drinda Merritt for her persistence in getting her class
started. And many thanks to Commissioner Goode and Valarie and her committee for their
hard work toward this revival that will be greatly appreciated in our community. Please
keep it up - we need you and your dedication! And please, anyone with ideas for programs
and activities, and/or time to donate, get in touch!
