tion. Bless them for their future vision and devotion to this park. The white pavilion, center
focus of the park, was made possible through the Felburn Foundation, who has given gen-
erously to many projects locally that benefited the saving of nature and Mother Earth. Many
others have offered help both physically and financially to preserve the park.
This park, contrary to what it was intended to be forever is being challenged in
a fight that had escalated in Yankeetown to full blown and divided the town more. Mayor
Clary’s behavior and language with children swimming in the old boat basin by the Pres-
byterian Church that has been the only swimming hole in Yankeetown for the past century
has gotten out of hand like many issues in Yankeetown over “CONTROL”. The town had
posted “no swimming” signs and put up a camera at the boat ramp basin park that will re-
cord innocent unknowing folks. The town council has targeted the passive Winding River
Garden Club Park as a replacement for the long used favorite cooling off swimming spot. If
the reason is safety of children vs. boaters, that should have been taken into consideration
with the grant to design and reconstruct the basin.
If the issue is liability, I am sure more kids could be hurt in the small kid’s park for
younger children behind town hall which is the only other alternative for recreation but for
smaller children. Yankeetown lacks anything for the young and teens. If I am not mistaken
the portion of the grants for the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve Park pertaining to playground
and recreation equipment for youth was deleted. If the young and youth of this country are
not given something to keep them busy or out of trouble, many will find something in it’s
place and that usually ends up with them in trouble or headed that way. There presently is
a petition being circulated to put this issue up for referendum vote by the people to keep
the park for passive use. If you are a registered voter and you would like to sign it call Dee
