ing injuries to the three passengers in the at-fault vehicle and also to the two passengers in
the secondary vehicle. The crash, which took place in Marion County, was investigated by
the Dunnellon Police Department, which requested and received assistance by the Florida
Highway Patrol with the investigation.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Michael Thomas Fitch, 26, Dunnellon,
was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse, traveling south on U.S. Hwy. 41, just south of the in-
tersection with Robinson Rd., while Sandra Ellen Smith, 57, also of Dunnellon, was driving
a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder, also traveling south on U.S. Hwy. 41, just south of the intersection
with Robinson Rd. - in front of Mr. Fitch.
According to the report, due to excessive speed, the front of Fitch s Mitsubishi col-
lided with the rear of Smith s Nissan, which then rotated clockwise and left the roadway to
the right, where the left front of Fitch s Mitsubishi collided with a power pole. Smith s Nis-
san then continued clockwise, with the right rear colliding with a phone box and a stop sign
before coming to rest, facing west on the right shoulder of U.S. Hwy. 41. Fitch s Mitsubishi
rolled and came to rest on the right shoulder of U S. Hwy. 41, facing south.
