Remembering the past

So as I am want to do, I polled the patrons of my favorite gathering places and ask
folks straight up, “what about the new port?” **crickets** (that means quizzical silence
btw).
The main response I get over here is “what new port?” Oh, I did get a “what about
the manatees” answer and one “what, are the mines finally running dry and time for us to
buy them?”
Wow, cynicism, you have to love it. It all looks good on paper and the speed in
which the new port development is taking place impressive; I’ve been following the story
with mild interest since last spring, and the latest minutes of the “Port Authority” (which is
just a version of the County Commission) has since gotten Port Citrus on the map and is now
scratching around for money for a feasibility study. I for one am going to be very interested
in those study results I can tell you.
What do I think about the new port? Hey, why not? Between the existing power
complex, the unfettered mining, and the newer nuclear plant that will probably never get
built, the proposed toll road by-pass (with newly build and dedicated bridge), the quaintness
of the region is already kind of going somewhere in a hand basket, so “in for a penny in for
a pound” I suppose. By the reaction of the folks around the relatively unspoiled county-seat
Tsala Apopka area, seems like just another nice day to go fishing.
