Ice Floats...Why Is That Unique?
Imagine a lake filled with
fish, plants, and other creatures. In
the winter, ice forms on the top of
the lake. What if the ice sank to the
bottom? And then another layer of
ice formed on top and this too sank
to the bottom? Eventually the lake
would fill with ice killing all the crea-
tures living in it. Imagine this lake
filled with ice, from the bottom up;
how long would it take for the sum-
mer sun to melt it away? Depend-
ing on the locations of the lakes, many would only partially thaw during the
