Post Office Future – The Yankeetown post office is slated for some changes. The
United States Postal Service held a meeting with Yankeetown residents to discuss the results
of a survey the USPS had conducted, giving the town several choices about the future of
their post office. The choices included options such as the YT post office could become part
of a nearby post office, which would be Inglis. It could become a Village post office which
is an office imbedded in a business sort of like the old days where a corner of the general
store would be dedicated to use as the post office and the store manager would put on his
postmaster hat when you came in and dig out your mail or sell you stamps. However, of
the 419 surveys that were sent out 132 were returned and of those 78% were for the reduced
hours option. Everything is supposed to stay the same except for the window service hours,
which will now be reduced to 4 hours a day. All other services, if we have them now, should
remain the same. People at the meeting got to vote on which hours that they wanted. The
postal service suggested 10AM to 2PM, however this means that the mail would not put up
until around noon, which some people didn’t like. It also meant that it would be harder for
people working the post office to find a second part time job if they had to. Two more op-
tions for morning hours which began at 8:30AM or 9:00AM were also suggested and finally
voted on. Morning hours won the vote however it is still up to the USPS management to
make the final determination. There was a surprisingly low turn out for the meeting. Appar-
ently many people thought that the sending back the survey was enough. (more on pg.12)

a.m., at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve. The sessions are free and stand alone. Attend
one or both. The goal is to help visitors develop practices that reduce the impact of their
presence in parks, refuges and preserves and to leave them the same or better than when
they arrived. Reservations are suggested but not required please call 352-447-5439 or email

Cool Things – A Navy Blimp is being moored at the Dunnellon Airport apparently
while the Navy does some tests. Even though you are prohibited from getting to close, it
is neat to see the thing and watch the crew handle it after a flight. See photo at right. Good
