Investigators with the Levy County Vice/Narcotics Unit contacted the Citrus County
Sheriff's Office and informed them of a methamphetamine lab located in a locked outbuilding
near the main residence. Citrus County investigators arrived at the residence and searched
the property and outbuilding, but determined that the items used in the production of meth-
amphetamine had been removed.
A 17-year-old Inglis boy and his friend were interviewed separately by detectives.
They said that 41-year-old Brenda Lee Spears had received a call from her husband, who had
just been arrested for purchasing items used to make methamphetamine. The boy said that
Spears had told his wife to gather the items used in making methamphetamine from a shed and
get rid of them, so law enforcement would not find them.
The report stated that the two friends had gathered the chemicals and had taken
them to a heavily wooded area near the house, on Mrs. Spears' order. According to the
sheriff's office, the chemicals are "extremely explosive, flammable, caustic and toxic" and
"could reasonably be expected to result in serious physical injury or a substantial risk of
death." The boy showed deputies the location of the chemicals, which were gathered and
turned over to the Citrus County Hazardous Materials Unit for disposal.
Brenda Spears was arrested around 5:30 p.m. and charged with child neglect without
causing great bodily harm and tampering with evidence. She was transported to the Citrus
County Detention Facility in Lecanto. Her bond was set at $10,000.
