Yankeetown Mayor's Report
A Guest Commentary by Yankeetown Mayor Dawn Clary
WGP Grant - The Friends of the WGP have received a Community Educational
Grant of $5000 from SWFWMD. The program called “Withlacoochee Salt Marsh Explora-
tion and Conservation” is aimed at educating the public about the importance of the salt
marshes to a multitude of fish and bird species. Increasing pressures on the Florida coastline
from many sources, make it important to keep the public informed. The Friends will have
help with this event from the FWCC who have offered to provide technical support and
speakers. Also the University of Florida Levy Extension office has offered to help. A plan-
ning meeting is tentatively scheduled for the end of this month to organize a two day event
for sometime in April. More details will be forthcoming as the plan solidifies.
Tree Trimming - The electric company will be in the area for perhaps as much as
the two months, trimming growth away from their (our) power lines in hopes of avoiding as
many power outages as possible. They have assured me that they will be sparring and are
sensitive to our community’s love of trees, however they do have a legal right via State Stat-
ute 163 to maintain a certain clearance between their lines and vegetation. It is always hard
to balance functionality with the desire to preserve nature. Unfortunately even Yankeetown
has a footprint.
Parking Ordinance - One of the comments that I hear over and over again is that
government gets too regulatory. After being in government for awhile I can kinda see both
sides. When a rule is written loosely it seems that some people will push the limits causing
friction and disputes between others. This leads government to make the laws more defining
eventually covering every scenario. The parking issue in Yankeetown is such a case. Our
ordinance is fairly simple, essentially limiting parking on town right of ways to day time
parking. There has been kind of a live and let live attitude towards it. However some people
have used this to block alleys depriving others of their right to use the alleys. It’s unfortu-
nate that sometimes we cannot just use common courtesy and respect for our neighbors.
Therefore a new ordinance to clarify and better define the rules to protect everyone’s rights,
is going forward. The ordinance is under development and is scheduled for hearings starting
in February. Good Night and Good Luck
